Rondeau and ellipses

The form of the stretcher bar plays an important role in Pius Ciapało's work. In an architectural series a few years ago, the artist explored the possibilities of creating optical illusion on polygonal planes. Currently, he continues to consider the shape of the circle and ellipse, i.e. over a closed, perfect form, which is not shown spatially, but on a plane. Pius Ciapało's structural painting brings out the potential energy inherent in the abstract form itself.
The author leaves freedom of perception and interpretation of his paintings. He is interested in the optical equilibrium or possible lack thereof in the illusory rotational motion – symmetrically uniform and unbalanced and dynamic. The internal structure of individual circles, caused by their divisions and the emerging problem of movement, as well as the dynamics of the spinning motion, the apparent "spinning" in a circle, strongly affects viewers.
The colours used by the artist are a spontaneous and expressive play of emotions, subjected at the same time to significant compositional and formal rigor. In this compositional consistency, however, the author makes breakthroughs, deliberately moving the center of the circle or ellipse. He then puts the viewer in the uncomfortable position of thinking that he "knows" and that he has understood the system, but meanwhile, the cognition of the artist's concept slips away, leaving him in an open field of exploration, supported only by emotional colour combinations.
